Are you part of a group of brilliant professionals, but struggling to get them to work together as a team? Do you think there’s room for greater cooperation among team members? Would you like to foster greater cohesion, motivation, and commitment within your team?

Teamwork is rewarding

Teamwork stems from the need to organize as a group in order to achieve specific goals as efficiently as possible. For a team to function effectively, in addition to having a clear understanding of our shared purpose and the goals we are pursuing, it is essential to build bonds, connections, and trust among the team members.

A team performs better and achieves better results when there is commitment, a shared purpose, and cohesion. By cohesion, we mean the interpersonal bonds that form among the people who make up the team. To achieve this state, we must set clear goals that help establish realistic expectations and foster a shared team purpose, so that all team members are working toward the same goal.

In this context, the role of the team leader is crucial for maintaining commitment, motivating the team, fostering constructive communication, and building positive relationships so that team members remain motivated and united. In this way, we can create a positive work environment, characterized by camaraderie and a sense of belonging to the group. The stronger these bonds are, the more efficient team members will be and the greater their well-being will be.

Variety is the spice of life

In organizations, there are various tasks that need to be carried out and responsibilities that must be assumed. For this reason, we need people with different aptitudes and skills who can perform the roles we require. In this regard, it is very enriching when teams are made up of members who bring diverse personality styles and different perspectives to their approach to work.

If we want to bring out the best in each person, it is best for everyone to focus on what they do best and build on their character strengths. For this reason, learning to work together and complement different personalities is essential. We must ensure that team members can identify their own personality and behavioral styles, as well as those of others, and be able to adapt their own styles to empathize, work together, collaborate, cooperate, and co-create.

Some organizations seek uniformity because their leaders often struggle to deal with differences. On the contrary, diversity should be viewed as a great asset. Leaders must be the first to internalize this idea and convey it to the rest of the team. It is essential to devote time and effort to understanding each member of the team, to grasp what makes them think the way they do and motivates them to act as they do, as well as to discover what they can contribute and how they can best develop their talents and grow professionally.

7 Tips for Improving Teamwork

To build a cohesive, committed, motivated, and efficient team, it is important to focus on several key areas:

#1. Clearly define the purpose and objectives.

For a team to function like a well-oiled machine, each person must know what is expected of them at all times, what tasks they are responsible for, and what their goals and responsibilities are, as well as clearly understand the purpose of their role within the organization. In this way, they can combine their efforts toward a common goal and achieve the desired results. It is necessary to review and rethink objectives frequently to adapt to changes and unforeseen events. When the work process is well-defined and clear, people know the path to follow and what is expected of them; consequently, they are more productive and efficient.

#2. Each member has a role.

Every person has gifts and strengths that should align with their assigned role. Even when work is done as a team, each member is assigned specific functions and tasks to ensure better organization and efficiency. In this regard, every team member must have a clear understanding of their role to avoid potential conflicts among team members. One of the main sources of errors, misunderstandings, and problems in the workplace is a lack of clarity regarding roles.

#3. Treat people with warmth and respect.

For team members to feel happy and included, respect must be the guiding principle. The basic rule is to treat people the way they would like to be treated (not the way you would like to be treated). For everything to work, team members must help and support one another. If you’re a team leader, don’t let the position go to your head. A positive attitude, connection, empathy, and humility will allow you to treat others as equals and make them feel that you’re more approachable.

#4. Everyone’s participation is needed.

Make sure all team members are involved and feel valued. It is highly recommended that people feel they play an important role in the team and have a clear understanding of their contribution. When each member is engaged and feels special, their commitment is likely to increase. People actively participate and are committed to what they help create and feel is their own. In this sense, the feeling of being valued increases happiness and efficiency at work.

#5. Praise progress and effort.

When leading a team, praising both group and individual progress keeps motivation high. As Dale Carnegie said, “Praise encourages effort.” Even if things don’t go entirely smoothly, the most helpful approach is to acknowledge the effort and contribution and encourage the team to improve and keep moving forward. It is possible to be both a demanding and respectful leader. Therefore, don’t skimp on praise, as long as it is sincere and comes from the heart, avoiding flattery. To do this, use specific examples to highlight what you want to acknowledge in someone.

#6. Listen to others.

When we only listen to ourselves, it’s hard to learn anything new. In fact, there’s an old saying that goes, “We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak.” That’s why it’s so beneficial to be open-minded toward others and actively listen to our colleagues’ ideas and suggestions. With this attitude, we’ll help the organization move forward, since progress depends on new ideas. For communication to be effective, it must be consistent, fluid, and constructive. Without listening, there is no communication, and without communication, it is impossible for a team to function.

#7. Acknowledge mistakes and focus on correcting them.

When you or someone on your team makes a mistake, the best approach is to acknowledge it as soon as possible and do whatever it takes to correct it. It’s a good idea to view the mistake as an opportunity to learn and do things better. Let’s not forget John Maxwell’s wise advice: “You either win or learn.” Focusing on the solution is a priority. And don’t forget to focus your attention on the mistake and its solution, rather than on the person who made it.

Don't forget: if you want to build more efficient and cohesive teams that work with motivation and commitment, keep these 7 key elements in mind.
